Generic Name: Finasteride
Formulation/s: Each tablet contains 5 mg of Finasteride
Indications or Use: Management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in patients w/ an enlarged prostate to cause regression of the enlarged prostate & improves urinary flow & symptoms associated w/ BPH; reduces the incidence of acute urinary retention & need for surgery including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) & prostatectomy. Male-pattern baldness (alopecia androgenetica) in men.
Dosage and Directions for Use: Benign prostatic hyperplasia Adult 5 mg daily. Alopecia Adult 1 mg daily for 3 months or more.
Administration: Take with or without food.
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity. Women who are or may potentially be pregnant and children.
Special Precaution: Monitor patients w/ large residual urine volume &/or severely diminished urinary flow for obstructive uropathy. Perform digital rectal exam & other prostate cancer evaluation prior to initiating therapy & periodically thereafter.
Adverse Reaction: Hypersensitivity reactions; decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders & reduced vol of ejaculate, breast tenderness & gynecomastia; testicular pain.
