Generic Name: Iron Sucrose
Formulation/s: Ferric Hydroxide Sucrose Complex (equivalent elemental Iron 20 mg)
Indications or Use: Iron deficiency in patients who clinically need rapid Iron supply or cannot tolerate oral Iron therapy or non-compliant; in active inflammatory bowel disease or chronic kidney disease where oral Iron preparation is ineffective.
Dosage and Directions for Use: Adult Individualized dosage. 5-10 mL (100-200 mg Iron) 1-3 times weekly IV drip infusion 2.5 mL (50 mg Iron) diluted solution for at least 8 min infusion time, or 5 mL (100 mg Iron) diluted solution for at least 15 min infusion time, or 10 mL (200 mg Iron) diluted solution for at least 30-minute infusion time. Slow IV injection Rate: 1 mL (20 mg Iron) undiluted solution/minute not exceeding 10 mL (200 mg Iron)/injection.
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to Iron sucrose or to other Iron parenteral products. Anemias not caused by Iron deficiency. Evidence of Iron overload or hereditary disturbances in utilization of Iron.
Special Precaution: For single use only. Risk of hypersensitivity reactions; increased risk in patients w/ history of severe asthma, eczema, other atopic allergy. Discontinue administration in patients w/ bacteraemia. Avoid paravenous leakage. Use w/ caution in case of acute or chronic infection. Reports of hypotension related to rate & total dose administered in patients w/ chronic kidney disease. Periodically monitor hematologic & hematinic parameters; w/hold therapy in patients w/ evidence of Iron overload. Perform careful risk/benefit assessment in patients w/ liver dysfunction. Avoid in patients w/ hepatic dysfunction where Iron overload is precipitating factor particularly porphyria cutanea tarda. No adequate & well-controlled studies in pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended for use in children.
Adverse Reaction: Dysgeusia; hypotension, Hypertension; nausea; Chest pain, hypervolemia, Congestive Heart Failure, cramps, musculoskeletal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, skin irritation, pruritus, application site reaction, dizziness, dyspnea, pneumonia, cough, headache, fever, asthenia, malaise.
Interactions: Reduced absorption of oral Iron.
