Generic Name: Folic Acid
Formulation/s: 5 mg Film-coated tablet
Indications or Use: Treatment & prevention of folate deficiency state. Protection against neural tube defects in the offspring of pregnant & women of child-bearing potential.
Dosage and Directions for Use: Folate-deficient megaloblastic anemia 5 mg daily for 4 months. Malabsorption states up to 15 mg daily. Chronic haemolytic state continue with 5 mg every 1-7 days. Prevention of neural tube defects in the offspring of pregnant & women w/ child-bearing potential 5 mg daily prior to pregnancy & continued through the 1st trimester.
Administration: Take with or without food.
Contraindication: Megaloblastic anemia secondary to vit B12 deficiency. May produce hematologic remission while neurologic damage progresses. Not to be given before a diagnosis has been fully established. Large & continuous doses may lower the blood concentration of vit B12.
Special Precaution: Not to be given alone or in conjunction w/ inadequate vit B12 for the treatment of undiagnosed megaloblastic anemia.
Adverse Reaction: GI disturbances & hypersensitivity reactions (rarely).
Interactions: May produce folate deficiency states w/ antiepileptics, OCs, anti-TB drugs, alcohol & folic acid antagonists e.g., aminopterin, MTX, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim & sulfonamides.
