Generic Name: Clindamycin
Formulation/s: 150 mg/ml (300 mg/2ml, 600 mg/4ml) Solution for Injection (I.M/I.V)
Indications or Use: Treatment of liver abscess, gas gangrene, pneumonia, septicemia; biliary tract, Staph bone & joint, various gynecological & skin infections. In combination w/ other drugs for the prophylaxis of surgical infection.
Dosage and Directions for Use: Adult Serious infections 600 mg-1.2 g/day in 2, 3 or 4 equal doses. More severe infections 1.2-2.7 g/day in 2, 3 or 4 equal doses. Life-threatening cases 4.8 g daily IV. Alternatively, may be administered in the form of a single rapid infusion of the 1st dose followed by continuous IV infusion [to maintain serum clindamycin levels >6 mcg/mL: Rapid infusion rate of 20 mg/min for 30 min, maintenance infusion rate of 1.25 mg/min; serum clindamycin levels >5 mcg/mL: Rapid infusion rate of 15 mg/min for 30 min, maintenance infusion rate of 1 mg/min; serum clindamycin levels >4 mcg/mL: Rapid infusion rate of 10 mg/min for 30 min, maintenance infusion rate of 0.75 mg/min]. Childn >1 month. Serious infections 15-25 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses. More severe infections 25-40 mg/kg/day in 3 or 4 equal doses. Treatment of infections caused by β-hemolytic streptococci Continue for at least 10 days to protect against subsequent rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis.
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to lincomycin or clindamycin.
Special Precaution: Risk of antibiotic-associated colitis. Patients w/ history of GI disease especially colitis; renal or hepatic impairment. Perform periodic liver & kidney function tests during prolonged therapy (including neonate & infants). Prolonged treatment may result to superinfection. Atopic individuals.
Adverse Reaction: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea; transient neutropenia, eosinophilia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia; pruritus, vaginitis; maculopapular rash, urticaria, generalized mild to moderate morbilliform-like skin rashes; jaundice & abnormalities in liver function tests.
Interactions: May enhance action of other neuromuscular blockers. Antagonism w/ erythromycin (in vitro).
