Generic Name: Deferiprone
Formulation/s: 500 mg Film-coated tablet

Other Ingredients are:
Microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, macrogol, titanium dioxide.

Indications or Use: Is used to treat iron overload in patients w/ thalassaemia for whom Desferrioxamine is unsuitable.

Dosage and Directions for Use:  : Deferiprone is given as 25 mg/kg body weight, oral use  thrice a day for a total daily dose of 75 mg/kg body weight, or as prescribed by the physician.

Administration: Take with or without food. Take 1st dose in the morning, 2nd dose at midday, 3rd dose in the evening. Preferably taken with meals to easily remember taking the medication.

Contraindication: Hypersensitivity. History of repeated episodes of neutropenia, agranulocytosis. Currently taking medications known to cause neutropenia or agranulocytosis. Pregnancy & lactation.

Special Precaution: Severe neutropenia or agranulocytosis. Perform WBC count weekly Check for symptoms of infection e.g., fever, sore throat or flu-like symptoms. Monitor body Iron load & perform liver biopsies.

Adverse Reaction: Joint pain & swelling. Increased liver enzymes, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting & increase in appetite. Reddish/brown urine discoloration.
