Generic Name: Methylprednisolone
Formulation/s: Each tablet contains 16 mg. Methylprednisolone
Indications or Use: Suppression of inflammatory & allergic disorders, rheumatic diseases, various skin & blood disorders e.g., hemangioma & the Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. Emergency management of acute idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
Dosage and Directions for Use: Initially taken 4-48 mg. a day.
Administration: Take with food
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity. Systemic fungal infections. Live virus vaccines.
Special Precaution: May mask signs of infection during therapy. Posterior sub-capsular cataracts, glaucoma w/ optic nerve damage & secondary ocular infection may enhance due to prolonged use. Nonspecific ulcerative colitis w/ probability of impending perforation, abscess or other pyogenic infection; diverticulitis; fresh intestinal anastomoses; active or latent peptic ulcer; renal insufficiency; hypertension; osteoporosis or myasthenia gravis; stress, hyperthyroidism, cirrhosis, ocular herpes simplex, psychic derangement. Women of childbearing potential. Pregnancy & nursing mothers. Prolonged use in elderly. Growth may be suppressed in children.
Adverse Reaction: Sodium retention, Congestive Heart Failure; muscle weakness, steroid myopathy, osteoporosis; peptic ulceration w/ possible perforation & hemorrhage, abdominal distentions; impaired wound healing, thin fragile skin; increased intracranial pressure, pseudotumor cerebri; development of Cushingoid state, suppression of growth in children; posterior subcapsular cataracts, glaucoma; vertigo, menstrual irregularities, decreased carbo tolerance.
Interactions: Convulsion may occur w/ cyclosporin. Increased clearance w/ hepatic enzyme inducers (e.g., phenobarbital, phenytoin & rifampicin).
